WHY IT IS NICE TO BE A UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO "ROCKET"
Those of us in Physics & Astronomy, Chemistry, Biology and Geology are by definition "Rocket Scientists", in contrast to many other unfortunate characters who appear in humorous stories of ineptitude.
As a geologist, it is nice to have a school mascot nicknamed "Rocky", even if he is dressed like an action figure.
Our mascot is featured prominently in the song sung before each major sporting event, even at opponents' stadiums or arenas, and even at events in which we are not involved! If only our school colors included glaring red - - - but then we might be confused with another Ohio school, whose mascot is an indigestible nut.
Our mascot does not look like an eagle disguised to look like José Carioca. Eastern Michigan really missed their chance when selecting their new mascot. What mascot is more appropriate for EMU than "The Flightless Birds" (with all due respect to Funky Winkerbean).
Our band does not look like an ODOT project. Look closely at those orange barrels - if they have BGSU stenciled across the front, they may begin to move.
At least the "Falcons" resemble real birds (except for the orange high-top tennis shoes - an easily understood necessity). Being surrounded by corn fields does allow students to observe raptors at work. Miami University, on the other hand, missed a golden opportunity to retain their "redskin" mascot while, at the same time, following NCAA guidelines on mascots. "Redskins" are also the tastiest of potatoes! Gender-neutral, non-threatening, and they could have nicknamed their costumed cheerleader "Spuds" (don't forget a black eye patch). Nothing beats a nice potato salad served up in a glass bowl on a sunny October afternoon! Central Michigan might consider the potato option when they finally discard their Native American mascot while remaining the "Chips". Commercial links are obvious. Or perhaps instead select a rodent (Chipmunks?)
Now "Bobcats"
make an interesting mascot. My brother-in-law has several. They are very useful for
cleaning up after The Thundering Herd, Broncos or Bulls. Rather than dress like one, the
cheerleader can drive the skid loader.
One question: if the Buffalo mascot is "The Bulls", what do you call members of their women's team - "The Lady Bulls?"
